The Shirò brand

In 2003, the designer Massimo Calestrini, taking advantage of his family’s decennial experience of working with precious skins, launched the Shirò brand, specialised in men’s and women’s clothing and accessories. The idea was to create the most incredible and exclusive exhibition of luxury bags, accessories and garment in the world because it was very clear to Massimo that the globalized market would allow him to reach worldwide the richest people in the world and to  offer them unique pieces of amazing Italian hand-crafted bags, accessories and clothing.

In Shirò philosophy, people since ages are using Crocodile  bags, wallets and luggage because it’s the best way to preserve money, keys and all the personal belongings: we strongly believe that everything will be well preserved in a crocodile bag, as well as in nature the Crocodile strongly keeps everything within its mouth!

The "Shirò" is a rare lizard with two tails which, in the tradition of the ancient African tribes, represents a precious good luck talisman. Legend has is that whoever finds a Shirò will be lucky for the rest of their lives.
The choice of the name and logo of the brand are closely linked to Africa where the Calestrini family – since 1852 to the beginning of the ‘70s - were owners of a crocodile breeding ground and various tanning facilities in Eritrea and Europe.

Nowadays, all this know-how is concentrated in the Shirò brand, united with the research and the exclusivity of rare materials – from crocodile to ostrich, from lizard to mink and sable. In the Made in Italy premises of Modena, Florence and Bologna every garment, every accessory is hand made in a limited edition.

In October 2003, Shirò debuted in the Milano Moda Donna calendar with the S/S 2004 collection. The success achieved both from the buyers and press, awarded the brand with an invite to participate in the Alta Roma shows in January 2004, where the label established itself at a national and international level.

In 2006 Shirò, already sold in the top multi-brand boutiques worldwide, opened its flagship shop in Milan, in one of the most ancient and prestigious streets of the city, via Gesù 15. In March 2008 a second single-brand boutique opened in Tokyo, inside the famous Imperial Hotel.

Since 2010 Shirò has been distributed in Dubai by Levant Group.

In November 2010 Shirò opened a flagship store in Moscow in Vremena Goda, the Fashion and Lifestyle Galleries, Kutuzovsky Prospekt 48.

Shirò brand is also distributed in the most important stores in South Korea (Trinity Shinsegae, Supernormal and others).

Massimo Calestrini

“It is necessary to be alive and receptive, only in this way will things speak to you, revealing their secrets”

With this philosophy Massimo Calestrini, born in Asmara – in Eritrea – in 1970, launched the Shirò brand in 2003.

Calestrini unites an inborn taste for beauty and for everything that is exclusive and precious with creativity and curiosity, a profound knowledge of exotic skins and unique materials, through which he has given life to an innovative and genuinely luxurious project.

Africa has always been an integral part of Massimo’s life who, after various consultancy experiences with important names in the world of fashion, decided to return to Ethiopia and to revive part of the company that his family, coming from Piedmont, had owned from the middle of the nineteenth century to the ‘70s, when they were forced to leave the African continent due to the civil war.

From 2003 to today, the fame of the label and of Massimo himself as a designer and entrepreneur has been a crescendo, both at a national and international level.

Important appointments like Alta Moda in Rome and Milano Moda Collezioni have been flanked by the opening of mono label boutiques in Italy and abroad. For the future the project is to increasingly expand and to take his own exclusive concept of luxury to a global level

La collezione

Inspiring the Shirò fall/winter 2009/2010 Men’s collection is the English countryside. All dull moorland hues from moss to brown to grey plus a touch of red add to the distinction of clothes with a ‘40s flair and yet a totally today style. The excellence is in the artisanal beauty of precious leathers (alligator, ostrich) and in the artful mix of materials – particularly where the exotic meets heavy warm fabrics like cashmeres and wool jacquards.

F/W Women Collections 2013

“Everything is more simple than one thinks, and at the same time, more complicated than one can understand,” Goethe’s words best express the philosophy of the Shirò collection designed by Massimo Calestrini. Simplicity and complexity because the superiority of the material translates into everyday luxury.

In which the details are jewels. Geometries: squares, lozenges, and stripes in shaved mink masterfully cut in centimetre wide pieces, are set with crocodile inserts as glossy as diamonds. Relief effects were achieved by varying the direction of the fur. In this way the highly desirable coat is a creation of strips of mink that radiate outward and lozenges in motion. Sportswear: a style that plays between the parallel lines of essentiality and sophistication. The precious materials play their part along with the seductive colour palette: indelible blue, violet and red, saturated yellow, emerald and forest green, but also burgundy, ivory, and black. Meringue effect: the incredible suppleness of the mink creates high-relieves, electrifies the collars and transforms the hems into waves through various lengths of the fur. The coats are fluffy and brilliant while the little mink jackets in white, black, and purple have the allure of contemporary passepartout. New trench: a wardrobe basic is updated in lightweight mink or razor thin, grey Breitschwanz lined with crocodile. Croco & Co.: the rareness of the basic materials exalted by exquisite tailoring is a symbol of accessible couture. The croco jackets are warmed by speckled fur or modified by crumpled effects.

Bags: in the mignon version, like grandmother used to carry, in a glossy variety of fancy colors; shoppers with numerous pockets and chains, in crocodile, python and leather skin in a wide range of colors. Then there are the maxi shoppers with pockets, compartments, and flaps in contrasting hues, plus the new generation of handbags: vertical, thin but spacious, in crocodile with shoulder strap and handle, that also have thin crocodile cords for closing where necessary.

F/W Men Collection 2013

Sport as a choice, free time as gratification, travel as an option, elegance as a status symbol: the true passions of the Shirò man are revealed by Massimo Calestrini who, with his sophisticated clarification of style, designs a collection that is sumptuous, rich and virile. He puts forward a declination of the most modern shades, asphalt, iron, lava and bronze but, above all, a new style that is not only reminiscent of the authentic British aplomb – focusing on wasted coats styled like riding jackets or like hunting gear with double coloured revers trimmed with iguana or crocodile – but also in the extraordinary lightness of crocodile and mink jackets that are as sensual as cashmere cardigans. Therefore, in every available moment the young business man, busy switching between the continental climate of cities like London or Moscow, or revved up with the pleasure of spontaneous, carefree, winter excursions in a cool convertible, will find extreme comfort in glossy, black crocodile coats or splendid vintage crocodile, in soft, almost impalpable, opaque shearling with velvet style revers. Crocodile is also the preferred material for suede or matte bomber jackets lined with sable or mink. For decisively sportier occasions, delightful, cropped, quilted blousons and tiny shearling jackets. When the dress code states special occasions, there is never a doubt: tuxedos in silky mink but also Iguana bombers lined with Breitschwanz, meticulously matched with shiny crocodile or iguana shoes or iguana ankle boots and, of course, with a tie or bow tie in silky mink.

The self-importance of the accessories is reasserted by a magnificent series of capacious bags dedicated to leisure time and trips for work and pleasure: fabulous travel bags in crocodile with contrasting suede lining and stitchings. Small, flat, shoulder bags or small clutches plus, a long procession of shoes that take us back to the aviator spirit of the ‘30s, with special rubber soles; Beatles style ankle boots, whether extra flat or with a heel, with soles strictly in leather, plus formal shoes according to the traditional Italian artisan style.
